  4. High Blood Sugar Levels: Fasting plasma glucose at 5.6 mmol/l or higher (around 101 mg/dL).

The study meticulously compared individuals with metabolic syndrome to a control group of 10,168 participants without the syndrome, with 47% of the total being women. Over an average follow-up period of 27 years, non-fatal cardiovascular events, including heart attacks and strokes, occurred in 32% of those with metabolic syndrome, in stark contrast to 22% in the control group. These findings underscore a significantly elevated risk of heart attacks and strokes associated with metabolic syndrome.

Notably, the study also revealed that for those who experienced heart attacks or strokes, the median time until the first non-fatal event was 16.8 years for individuals with metabolic syndrome compared to 19.1 years for the control group. This 2.3-year difference suggests that individuals with metabolic syndrome are more susceptible to early heart attacks or strokes.
